The consignment of 50 tones of Lato milk was flagged off by the Minister of Agriculture, Animal Industries and Fisheries (MAAIF), Frank Tumwebaze.
Tumwebaze congratulated Pearl Diary Company for investing in a state-of-the art processing plant with capacity to process about 800,000 litres of milk daily.
The Lato, Uganda’s flagship powdered milk is produced by Pearl Diary in Mbarara city.
“I also thank the company for contributing to the development of the diary value chain. Dairy farmers now produce with due regard to the requirements of the market,” Tumwebaze said.
He thanked Zambia for having sent their inspectors who confirmed that Lato milk products are internationally certified.
Maj. Gen David Kasura, the Permanent Secretary, MAAIF, said that Zambia and the Coca Cola Africa, after a thorough inspection, established that the processed milk products meet the international standards and subsequently gave a green light for exports to commence.
This is the first time Uganda is exporting powdered milk to Zambia as part of the efforts to diversify the market.
The Ministry of Agriculture recently highlighted three strategic priorities that they intend to adopt to transform the lives of small holder farmers.
These include; increased production and productivity, markets and access to markets and agro-processing.
