SOROTI: WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 02, 2022

The recent national recognition of the Surgeons from Soroti Regional Referral hospital has sparked excitement in Eastern Uganda.

Dr Joseph Epodoi and team were hosted by the deputy speaker of parliament, Anita Among, at her office after they were awarded the Golden Jubilee medal for distinguished service.

Among thanked Dr Epodoi and his colleagues for putting Uganda on the map after they successfully carried out an operation that needed international specialized hospitals that would demand millions of money.

“I am so glad to be with you this afternoon and I encourage other professionals to emulate your ethical spirit to serve our communities rather than spearheading monetary gain. Accept this sh20,000,000 which I am giving you on behalf of parliament to enable you have lunch on your way back to Soroti,” Among said.

She added that she would follow up the plans to refurbish Soroti regional hospital in order to bring about infrastructure improvement.

Dr Epodoi is a senior consultant surgeon, Urologist and head of surgery department in Soroti hospital who led the team that successfully separated the conjoined twins in March 2021, saving one and losing the other.

The conjoined twins were delivered at Amuria District Hospital to Joyce Alinga, 21, a senior three student who conceived during the Covid-19 lockdown.

Alinga is a resident of Aujongor Village, Obalanga Sub County in Kapelebyong district.

Epodoi called their recognition a motivational factor for entire medical fraternity will inspire others to work within their means to serve the people.

However, Charles Nange a resident of Kosara village in Kamutur sub county in Bukedea district noted that there are also other distinguished civil servants in rural communities who work very hard but never recognized.

“Even their supervisors jealously don’t recommend them for promotion. Take for example in the education sector; promotion is not based on output but the academic results which degrades the whole system,” he argued.
