GULU: MONDAY, JANUARY 3, 2022

Leaders of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in Acholi Sub-region have called on the parents and caretakers of children under five years of age to turn up in big numbers in the coming mass vaccinations against polio.

The exercise is scheduled to take place from January 14 to January 16, 2022.

The Ministry of Health last year ordered for mass polio vaccinations of all children below five years after detecting polio germs in random effluent tests in Kampala.

Geoffrey Alii, the Chairperson of Gulu Disabled Persons Union (GDPU) who developed physical disability after suffering from Polio disease, while meeting Parents and guardians of children with disabilities over the weekend cautioned against undermining Polio disease.

He warned that when not immunized against, polio causes irreversible disability in people which affects them for the whole life time.

Simon Ongom Okwige, the former board Chairman of the GDPU and LC3 Chairperson of Koch Lii Sub-county in Nwoya district, said he knows how dangerous polio is because he once suffered from it as a child.

He said this is why he feels compelled to liaise with district health officials in sensitizing and encouraging parents to embrace polio immunization.

Ongom also asked parents to take their children with disabilities just like any other children to schools when learning institutions reopen next week.

Teddy Aciro Luwar, the Chairperson of Gulu Women with disabilities Union (GUWODU), which covers Gulu district/City, Amuru, Nwoya, Omoro, encourages fellow women to fully vaccinate their children against Polio disease when the day comes.

William Onyai, the Heath Educator of Gulu district, explained that the two days exercise will be door-to-door and medics would administer oral vaccines under strict observance of the Standards Operating Procedures against Covid-19.
