ARUA CITY: SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 04, 2021
A community well that has failed to be rehabilitated in the past 30 years is finally undergoing completion following an intervention by Arua City Woman Member of Parliament, Maurine Osoru.
The well serves the communities of Okaliba and Anguruvu cells in Ayivu Division where residents have for years relied on water from open unprotected streams for drinking.
They said for all these years, their cries went unheard that they resorted to collecting money to rehabilitate the water point but were unable to complete the project.
That prompted a desperate call to MP Osoru who responded with the much needed sh850,000 to complete the rehabilitation.
Safi Agupio, 56 and a resident of Okaliba cell did not hide his happiness, saying that they have been suffering from stomach aches, running stomach and intestinal worms since rain water washes and deposits rubbish in the streams they drink from unchecked.
Christine Bako, the chairperson water construction committee, said they resorted to collecting money to finance the rehabilitation on their own but were unable to complete the project, prompting a desperate call to the Woman MP.
The local council one chairman Okaliba cell, Matias Amaku, said it has been absurd that his people within the catchment area have been drinking the same dirty water with their animals due to lack of alternative source and inability by the then Pajulu sub county or Arua district to provide a source of safe water for the people.
Marlon Avutia, the Ayivu Division Mayor cried to the residents that since his inauguration, the division has not received any funding from the government to do any development work and praised MP Osoru for her rescue mission.
