SOROTI: TUESDAY, AUGUST 17, 2021

Soroti district has failed to construct a health centre III in Tubur sub-county due to a wrangle that has erupted over part of the 5-acre land that was given by the community for the project.

The sh465m project was supposed to commence at the beginning of the current financial year but nothing has been done since an individual staying in Kampala has laid claim to 2 acres of the land according to district official.

The Health centre III to be located in Acuna parish, Tubur sub-county was meant to have about 18 staff, led by a senior clinical officer, a maternity ward and a functioning laboratory.

Of the 12 sub-counties in Soroti district, Tubur is the only one without a health centre III after losing its health centre to the new Tubur town council.

Bob Owiny, the district councilor for Tubur sub-county identified the distant claimant as Lule and said that the land contested by him is community land that the clan voluntarily offered for development since the days of a Buganda colonial agent, Semei Kakungulu, who worked in the area.

He said that none of the community members apart from Lule is against the proposed construction of a health centre.

Soroti Resident district commissioner, Patrick Okumu confirmed that he has received a letter of protest from Lule, objecting to the proposed project.

Okumu said he will organize a community dialogue and meeting with Lule to sort out the dispute.
