HOIMA: SUNDAY, 05 SEPTEMBER 2021
A fancy operating theatre at Kigorobya health centre IV in Kigorobya County, Hoima district has remained unused for 10 years since its construction.
Medics at the health facility said that the lack of operationalisation of the theatre was due to lack of an anaesthetic technician.
The theatre was built in 2012 and equipped with an operating table, oxygen Cylinder, anaesthetic machine and sterilizer among other necessary gear but no anaesthetic technician was recruited to use them.
Josephine Tibananuka, a resident of Runga landing site who visited the health facility while in need of surgery, said she was turned away by health workers at the facility who told her that the theatre is not operational.
Patients in need of surgery have continued to be referred to Hoima Regional Referral Hospital.
Joseph Kyamanywa, a resident of Buhirigi village in Bombo sub-county has urged the government to expedite the process of recruiting and deploying an anaesthetic officer at the health center to enable the health workers to attend to expectant mothers with birth complications.
Dr. Lawrence Tumusiime, the Hoima District Health Officer, admitted that the theatre has been dysfunctional for too long.
He however urged the residents for more patience saying that the government is in the last stages of recruiting an anaesthetic technician at the facility.
