MASINDI: TUESDAY, AUGUST 24, 2021

Dr. Elly Mabumba, the principal medical officer at the Ministry of Health, said eating plenty of local foods boosts immunity towards common and emerging diseases including the fearsome Covid-19.

“Local foods, mostly vegetables, boost our immune system. So, let us eat plenty of them to defeat the deadly virus,” Dr. Mabumba advised.

He was addressing the Masindi district Covid-19 task-force on Monday.

Dr. Mabumba called on the task-force to sensitize the people on how to balance diets at home and encourage eating what is locally available.

His examples included Grow-foods like beans, matooke, soy beans, peas, groundnuts or generally legumes; Go-foods like rice, cereals, potatoes, maize and milk and Glow-foods such as carrots, avocados, bananas and greens like amaranthus, jute mallow, spinach, spider plant etc.

The health expert explained that people who eat local foods on daily basis have high chances of defeating diseases including the deadly Coronavirus.

Dr. Patrick Baguma, the District Health Officer pledged that the task-force will include messages on balanced diet on their routine sensitization programmes.

“[I agree with Dr. Mabumba] that local foods are rich in building the immune system. Our people should really consider having them on table, especially fruits,” he said.
