The Ministry of Health is distributing thousands of mosquito nets to vendors who keep markets open around the country. President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni directed that all vendors should get mosquito nets in his last address before the lockdown.
Dr Diana Atwine, Permanent Secretary Ministry of Health asked traders to maintain Standard Operating Procedures so that they don’t expose their customers.
As the countries across the globe are struggling with corona virus pandemic, the President of Republic of Uganda HE Yoweri Kaguta Museveni directed market vendors to sleep in the market places as a way of containing the spread of corona virus in the country.
Market vendors in three markets of Hoima Central Market, Kikuubi Market, and Duhanga Roundabout Market in Hoima City yesterday received 800 mosquito nets from the government.
Samuel Kisembo Araali the Resident City Commissioner – Hoima explains that the vendors who have been operating along the roads have been also directed to shift to the above nearby markets and sleep there adding this has been done to contain the spread of the virus.
The presidential representative has asked the vendors to put the nets in good use, to follow and adhere to government directives in fighting corona virus. He has also called upon the market leadership to ensure the SOPs are implemented.
“No one should be allowed to access the market without washing hands, wearing masks, or not observing the social distance and their temperatures should be checked.” Kisembo noted.
Kisembo also urged the vendors against taking president directive for granted as he ordered them to start sleeping in the market to control the spread of the deadly corona virus.
Gerald Alinaitwe market vendor at Hoima Central Market appreciated the government for delivering mosquito nets adding that this will help to prevent both the spread of corona virus and mosquito bites. He has asked the felloe vendors to adhere to the presidential directive for the safety of their lives.
Marion Nyangoma the market vendor at Duhanga Roundabout says she will put good use of the net noting that it’s for the good of her health. “I’m calling upon my colleagues to be vigilant and observe SOPs because life has no spare.” She noted.
Last month, the Ministry of Health started distributing mosquito nets to vendors sleeping in markets around Kampala. A total of 5,000 nets were distributed in the different markets in Kampala including Nakasero, Owino, Nakawa and Kalerwe markets among others
