Busiro county in Wakiso district has donated 9,310 units of blood in the ongoing blood donation exercise in Buganda Kingdom.

Last month, the Kabaka’s Foundation and the Uganda Red cross launched a competition of blood donation in the Counties of Buganda Kingdom so as to increase the stock of blood at the blood banks at the different health units.

According to Uganda Red Cross Society, the chief donor on the last day of blood donation in Busiro was Bishop Paul Ssamogerere who coordinated the clergy through the activity and led by example donating blood himself.

“I must say great thanks to the people of Busiro County who have brought it this far. This is a good sign of love of God and unity,” Bishop Semogerere is quotted as saying.

The Executive Director Kabaka’s Foundation, Kaggwa Ndagala has said the blood donation drive lasted for a five days with intense mobilization calling for community support to donate blood to save lives of people.

Ndagala thanked the County Chief, Charles Ssebwaana Kiberu Kisirizza and his team for the good mobilization of the community to participate in blood donation.

Richard Kabanda, the Behavioral Health Scientist at Ministry of Health Uganda said there is need to refocus energies to prevention of non-communicable diseases that mostly require a person to be given external blood to resuscitate their lives.

He noted: “We are dying slowly and slowly due to shortage of blood in hospitals and health centers so there is need for us to donate blood to help in fighting such non-communicable diseases.”

Busiro is the second County in Buganda to have hosted the blood donation competition after Buddu County.

The four months exercise heads to Kyaddondo, Ssese, Bugerere and Singo before winding up in Kyaggwe County between November 30 and December 3, 2021.
