The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) through Agency for Cooperation in Research and Development (ACORD) has donated an assortment of sanitary commodities to the people encamped at the different internally displaced people’s (IDP) camps in Kasese district.
The items including sanitary towels, pads and bar and liquid soaps were delivered to the district stores on Wednesday.
While receiving the donation, the Kasese District Chief Administrative Officer, Amis Masereka Asuman hailed the organization for the items saying they will go a long way in relieving young ladies who are facing a number of challenges in the IDP camps.
He appealed to the rest of the organizations operating in the district to also extend a helping hand to the people who are suffering in the IDP camps.
Ronald Kato, the Executive Director Youth Link for Development and one of the members who handed the donation to the CAO said they have information that some young ladies have allegedly engaged themselves in commercial sex in a bid to get money to buy sanitary pads.
He warned that such an act puts the young girls at risk of contracting sexually transmitted diseases including HIV/AIDS.
Edson Kule, a Community Facilitator working with ACORD Uganda said in partnership with UNFPA, they will also implement a project on gender based violence and reproductive health in Kasese district.
