Vaccination of teachers against the deadly corona virus in Amuru district in northern Uganda has kicked started today. Over 1000 teachers are expected to be vaccinated in the entire district.

The vaccinated is targeting mostly teachers ahead of reopening of learning institutions across the country. Amuru district received a total of 3000 doses of Cinovax and 1500 doses of AstraZenecca vaccines for vaccinating teachers.

Dr. Patrick Odong Olwedo, the District Health Officer – DHO Amuru has urged teachers to turn up for the exercise at the designated vaccination centres. “Those in Kilak – North County should go to Pabo primary school, Pabo sub county and Kilak – South County should go to Amuru Lamogi primary school in Amuru sub county,” he explained.

William Latim Alex, the head teacher, Agwayugi primary school in Lamogi sub county noted that the vaccination centers should have been located in the middle or center of the different sub counties so as to enable teachers to have easy access to these centers.

“To move from Lamogi sub county to Amuru sub county is more than 25 kilometers while for one to move from Elegu and Atiak to Pabo primary school is also more than 15 kilometers hence the distance is unbearable for teachers in those sub counties,” noted Latim.

Joyce Lanyero, the Amuru district Education officer cited that the district expects to vaccinate over 1000 teachers which also included the non – teaching staff and some teachers will now be receiving their second jabs of the vaccines.

Lanyero cautioned teachers to value and take this exercise seriously and they must all report to the vaccination centers for the one-week exercise.

On the other hand, Lanyero noted that the directive to have only two vaccination centers was made by the ministry not the district and Amuru Lamogi primary school is in the middle for those from Lakang, Lamogi, Layima, Amuru town council and Lamogi sub county while Pabo primary school is also in the center for the sub counties in Kilak North county.

She has therefore urged teachers to go to the nearest vaccination centers and for those in Lamogi to go to Pabo primary school and even those in Apaa should go to the nearest while this exercise is for both the government teachers and private teachers.
