The Uganda Medical Association (UMA) has applauded the government for the elaborate vaccination plan against Covid-19.
The president of the association, Dr. Richard Idro, said that the government has taken the right step by coming out boldly with an aim of having at least 22 million Ugandans vaccinated and challenged health workers to use the chance and get vaccinated by the end of September.
“We applaud the government for the decision of vaccinating everybody who needs the vaccination, and if the reports from the Minister of Health are anything to go by, then starting next month we shall receive large doses of vaccines,” he explained.
Dr. Idro proposed that health workers should lead by being the first people to be vaccinated so that by the end of September there should not be any health worker who is not vaccinated.
He commended those that have received the first dose but urged them to go for the second jab as recommended.
Dr. Idro was on Tuesday, speaking during a meeting with the health workers at Fort Port Regional Referral Hospital, intended to appreciate them for the hard work they are doing in treating Covid-19 patients amidst the challenges that they are currently facing.
At the same function, Dr. John Mark Bwanika, the Director Rocket health, handed over assorted supplies including salt, soap, sugar and personal protective equipment (PPE) as a sign of appreciation for what the medics have done in treating the patients.
Dr. Mukuzi Muhereza, the Secretary General for Uganda Medical Association, raised a concern that the government recently promised to work on the issues they had raised but since then, these have remained on paper.
He said among the unfulfilled promises is the issue of increasing supplies and drugs in the health centers, providing health workers with PPE and enhancing their payment.
Last week, the government received a consignment of 299,520 doses of AstraZeneca vaccines from the United Kingdom government bringing the total of the vaccines so far received by the government of Uganda to 2.2 million.
