Police in Gulu Central Police Station, this morning fired teargas to disperse angry students of Gulu College of health Science who were striking against the increase in tuition fees and unfair treatment from the school administrators.

According to the circular issued out to students by the school administrators during the reopening of the school, Diploma Students under Government Sponsorship would pay 1.47 Million from 1.27 million shillings while private sponsored students would pay 2.5Million from Shillings 2.077million.

Paul Joachim, one of the students, accuses the police of using excessive force to disperse students who were busy reading their books inside their dormitory and others were for peaceful demonstration in regards to unfair treatment and increment in tuition fees.

Steven Howard, another student, said they have been demanding the school authority to clarify why increasing the tuition fees for private students during these hard times but no explanation was given prompting students to organize for peaceful demonstration.

The students unanimously chanted we want the Dean of Students together with the new Principal out of the school and new tuition fees revised.

An effort to get more comments from the school administrators were futile as they were still locked up inside for an emergency meeting at the school compound by the time of filling this story.

David Ogom Mudong, the PRO for Aswa River Region, said they were forced to use teargas as the last resort after receiving intelligent reports about the students planning for strike.

Police have since then sealed off the school premises  allowing students to only pick their luggage and leave the school.
