Sarah Mateke Nyirabashitsi, the minister of state for youth and children affairs who also doubles as the Kisoro district Woman Member of Parliament, has embarked on giving delivery beds to health facilities in Kisoro district so as to improve maternal health for pregnant mothers.
Last week, Mateke traversed the district, giving out brand new delivery beds to health centres which she identified during her campaign trail as one of the critical needs in the Kisoro health care system.
“It was my observation that most health facilities in the district had ordinary delivery beds like the ones people use in their homes. Other health facilities had very old delivery beds,” said Mateke.
She explained that it is so disheartening to find a pregnant mother coming to a health facility and bring a new life into this world in such poor conditions.
During her tour, the minister visited Kagano Health Centre III, Nyarusiza Health Centre III and Muramba Health Centre III.
Moses Munyaneza, the in-charge of Nyarusiza HCIII appreciated minister Mateke for supporting the health center.
“Each time the honorable minister brings something important to the district, she never forgets health facilities and that means she values the lives of Ugandans,” Munyaneza commented.
Evally Mbaga, the in-charge of Muramba HCIII, said the biggest challenge they often experience at the facility is having more than three mothers delivering at the same time when the health centre has two beds for delivery.
He noted that the new delivery bed is a great boost to the health facility.
According to Kisoro district Local Government, the total fertility rate of Bafumbira is 8.5 children per adult woman as per the 2002 Uganda Bureau of Statistics census, which is very high.
